Eagan certifies about $396,000 in delinquent utility accounts for tax collection

The Eagan City Council on Sept. 2 closed a public hearing and approved certification of delinquent utility bills, allowing the city to send the assessments to Dakota County for collection with property taxes.
"The city currently has approximately 1,118 utility billing accounts with delinquent balances," Miss Miller told the council during the public hearing, adding that the assessable amount of those accounts is "approximately $396,000." Council members asked staff what percentage of utility accounts that represents; staff estimated roughly 5%.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing. Councilmember Subpoena moved "to close the public hearing and approve the final assessment rule for delinquent utility bills and authorize its certification to Dakota County for collection of property taxes." The motion was seconded, carried on voice vote, and staff will forward the certified accounts to the county for collection.
The certification process permits the city to collect unpaid utility charges by placing the assessments on property tax statements; the council did not change the city’s utility billing policy at the hearing.
