Council member Maple reports on Netherlands climate and transit exchange, highlights Sacramento projects

She told the council the delegation heard about Sacramento’s chip plant coming online, hydrogen projects including a hydrogen hub at McClellan, electrification efforts, active mobility initiatives and the city’s climate action plan. Maple said European representatives — including attendees from the governor’s office, NASA, Caltrans and regional transportation agencies — reacted strongly to Sacramento’s pedestrian safety record: “They were shocked at the number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries we have in Sacramento,” she said.
Maple also highlighted local items of interest to the delegates: Twin Rivers School District’s all-electric school bus fleet, bus rapid transit and transit-oriented development, and the city’s student ride-free transit program. She thanked the Air District for funding her travel and noted gifts given by the province of North Holland.
Maple said the trip included exchanges on housing and transit challenges and opportunities and that the delegation discussed both public- and private-sector projects. She closed by inviting European guests to visit Sacramento for a lighting ceremony the delegation referenced in remarks to the council.
