San Marcos proclaims September 2025 Senior Center Awareness Month; officials spotlight local programs and participation

Mayor Jane Hughson proclaimed September 2025 as Senior Center Awareness Month for San Marcos and urged residents to support senior programs and activities across the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) region.
The proclamation cited regional demographics and program statistics, noting the CAPCOG 10-county region has more than 399,006 citizens aged 60 or older. It described local programs including the San Marcos Activity Center (referred to in remarks as a de facto senior center), library senior programming, and the Lifelong Learning program. The proclamation referenced continued funding authorized by the Older Americans Act of 1965 in support of senior services.
City speakers highlighted recent participation figures presented in the proclamation: more than 4,121 registrations for parks and recreation senior events since reopening after COVID; Lifelong Learning program totals since inception; and through July the public library’s senior events and attendance figures. One city speaker said an average of 171 seniors visit the San Marcos Activity Center each day in a typical year.
City officials thanked staff and community partners who provide classes, caregiver support, technology help and health information for older adults. No formal policy or budget actions were taken during the meeting on this proclamation.
