Mayor Jane Hughson proclaimed September 2025 as National Suicide Prevention and Action Month for San Marcos and called on residents to support mental-health awareness and prevention efforts.
The proclamation cited national statistics for 2023, including that suicide was the 11th leading cause of death overall in the United States and the second leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 34, and it cited data noting more than 49,000 deaths by suicide in 2023. The proclamation and accompanying remarks referenced national survey figures for suicidal thoughts and attempts and emphasized that most people who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental-health condition.
Amy Lowry, identified in the meeting as the clinic director at the San Marcos mental health clinic on Bishop Street, spoke after the proclamation. She thanked staff, described the work of the mobile crisis outreach team, and provided crisis resources for the community. Lowry repeated the 988 crisis hotline and the 741741 text line and described them as free crisis and suicide-prevention support options: “there's a text line that's 741741, and you just text HOME and you can also receive free, crisis and suicide prevention support.”
The proclamation and remarks urged residents to learn warning signs, ask directly about suicidal thoughts when concerned, and encourage people to seek help. No formal votes or budget actions were associated with the proclamation during the meeting.
