Land dedication and discussion
The council voted 7‑0 to accept the dedication of three lots totaling about 7.44 acres for the Olathe Animal Care Campus. Council Member Schoonover said he has concerns about the overall cost of the animal care and control facility and suggested approaching Johnson County to determine whether the county could provide animal control services; staff noted the county previously declined to take on the service. Council Member Felter said he could not support a $25,000,000 animal shelter and asked that staff pare down costs; staff indicated more information would be provided at a future meeting (presentation scheduled in two weeks).
Ordinance amending animal code
Later in new business the council unanimously approved ordinance number 25‑31 to amend Titles 8 and 9 related to animals. The meeting record contains no public speakers on the ordinance item and the roll call was 7‑0 in favor.
What to expect
Staff said a fuller presentation on the animal care campus project — including costs and design details — will be provided at a future meeting where council will have further opportunity to consider the project's scope and budget.
