Large Main Street sculpture to be dedicated Oct. 22; city says fountain repairs are unlikely
Summary
The commission received an update on a major Main Street sculpture, including a planned Oct. 22 dedication and etched poet lines; staff said the nearby fountain was not repaired because the estimated replacement cost is about $250,000 and the city has not moved forward.

Commissioners received a progress report on a large public sculpture being installed on Main Street and heard related questions about nearby fountains and other public pieces.
Heather, a staff member in the mayor's office, said the sculpture is a large installation with three circular planting beds and large spheres above the structure. She said local writers and poets were commissioned to contribute text that will be etched into limestone on the ground and named those contributors: "Silas House, Frank X Walker, Jeff Worley, and our youth poet laureate, Eva Alcarez Monhe." She also announced the dedication date and time: "The dedication of this piece is going to be October 22 at 10:00."
During discussion a commissioner asked about the fountain near the installation; Heather said the fountain stopped working a couple of years ago and that replacing it had an estimated price tag "like, $250,000," which is why the city has not moved forward with replacement. She said maintenance of the new sculpture will be performed by the city and that, if maintained, the piece should last "a hundred" years. Commissioners also asked about a previous dandelion sculpture across from the Kentucky Theater; staff said they believed that piece had been on private property and was not an active city installation.
There was no formal action on the sculpture itself at the meeting; the commission was given the update and invited to attend the public dedication in October.
