Lexington commission opens call for utility-box artists; deadline Sept. 15

The Lexington Public Arts Commission heard an update on the city’s utility-box art program and the current call for artists.
Heather, a staff member in the mayor's office, described past rounds and the current outreach. "In the first round, which, was June, we had 6," she said, and added that the program seeks to distribute painted utility boxes across different districts. Heather said the current call has a Sept. 15 deadline and that about 24 applications are already in, with the majority expected to arrive near the deadline. She noted prior rounds drew a substantially larger number of applicants: "Last time, I think we had 80 something."
Heather said staff are assembling a list of utility-box locations and aim to spread projects across neighborhoods; she also said she receives suggestions from the community and that Channel 18 covered the program, boosting public response. There was no formal motion or vote on the utility-box program during the meeting.
Staff indicated they will continue to accept and review applications and plan installations this fall if schedules and selections allow. Heather said she can provide an electronic flyer or email about the call for artists to commissioners and community members on request.
