Borough staff seek $18,200 grant to build elevated walkway and restore spruce on River Center property

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Finance Committee on Sept. 2 introduced an ordinance to accept and appropriate a National Fish Habitat Partnership grant of $18,200 for the River Center access and restoration demonstration project. Samantha Lopez, manager at the River Center, told the committee the award would fund installation of an elevated light-penetrating walkway, spruce restoration for a roughly 200-foot section of riverbank behind the center, and related bank work.
"This is a grant that is coming through from the National Fish Habitat Partnership and is going to be about, 18,200, to put in a elevated light penetrating walkway, a spruce tree restoration, section about 200 feet long, and, yeah, and some gonna be on our riverbank, out back behind the river center," Samantha Lopez said.
Committee members did not ask substantive follow-up questions at the introduction. The ordinance was listed as eligible for consent and is scheduled for a public hearing on Sept. 16.
