Ellis County proclaims September 2025 National Suicide Prevention Month

The Ellis County Commissioners Court on Tuesday adopted a proclamation recognizing September 2025 as National Suicide Prevention Month and urged residents to use local and national crisis resources.
The court’s reading of the proclamation noted national and local statistics about suicide and described steps the county and partners can take to prevent it. Judge (presiding) read the proclamation and commissioners joined county behavioral health staff and North Texas Behavioral Health Authority representatives for remarks and a photo after the reading.
The proclamation noted that about one person dies by suicide in the United States every 11 minutes and emphasized that suicide is among the leading causes of death for young people. Caitlin Wilkinson, Ellis County’s director of behavioral health, said the North Texas Behavioral Health Authority has increased its presence in Ellis County over the past two years and now operates a crisis line available “24 hours, 365 days a year.” Wilkinson provided crisis-line cards and gave the hotline number as +1 (866) 260-8000 during her remarks.
The court’s proclamation also directed residents to dial 988 for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and cited the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as a resource. The proclamation noted that in fiscal year 2024 Ellis County established the office of director of behavioral health to expand access to services and support coordination.
The court accepted the proclamation as presented and held a short recognition and photograph with North Texas Behavioral Health Authority representatives following the motion.
The announcement emphasized outreach and the availability of both county and statewide crisis resources; no formal budgetary action was taken at the time.
