Commission to revisit McConnell Air Force Base overlay; recommendation includes customized protective overlay

Sedgwick County staff told commissioners on Sept. 3 that a follow-up recommendation on a McConnell Air Force Base (MAFB) zoning/land-use overlay will return to the board after additional negotiations between base staff and the property owner.

Staff said the new MACC recommendation differs from the version the commission saw previously: ‘‘There are uses that have been added. There are uses that have been taken away,’’ a county staff member said. The updated recommendation was described as being submitted for approval with a customized protective overlay intended to address compatibility between civilian uses and base operations.

The county indicated the update followed another round of conversations between McConnell staff and the property owner. Staff said they would be available during the forthcoming briefings to answer questions from the commission about what changed since the prior public meeting.

Next steps: commissioners will consider the revised recommendation and the proposed protective overlay at the upcoming meeting; staff said they will brief the commission on details during the public session.
