Committee forwards revised class-rank policy to full board

The Policy & Human Resources Committee of the Beloit School District voted to forward revisions to Policy 345.1 (Rule 1), governing class rank, to the full school board for approval.

The committee approved the motion 3-0 after a short presentation and discussion. The revised policy defines how advanced classes will be weighted, clarifies how grade-point averages will appear on transcripts, and includes provisions designed to encourage students to take courses face to face the first time rather than relying on credit-recovery options.

Mrs. Vortek, a district staff member, told the committee the revisions were developed after feedback at the district TLE Pupil Services Committee and with multiple stakeholder groups to ready the policy for implementation this school year. "We recognize that credit recovery holds a purpose and we need credit recovery in our district, but we don't want this over reliance of I didn't pass it the first time, so kind of oh well, I'll take it in credit recovery," she said.

Board Member Juan Romero said he supported the change, calling it "a good progress to help encourage the achievement" of students. Board President Johnson said she had observed the policy's review in the TLE/Pupil Services meeting and concurred with the committee's direction.

If approved by the full board, the revised Rule 1 will govern class-weighting and transcript presentation for the current school year. The committee record shows the TLE committee had previously voted unanimously in favor of the revisions.

The committee made a formal motion to send Policy 345.1 (Rule 1) to the full board; the motion passed on a 3-0 voice vote.
