Victor Valdivinos, the cityads environmental health director, told the council the environmental health services department "is formally requesting additional funds to cover expenditures related to chemicals utilized in the mosquito control efforts." He said intermittent rains after a prolonged drought, together with a high water table, have produced standing water in low-lying areas that creates "the perfect mosquito breeding environment." Valdivinos offered to answer questions from council.
Council members and staff discussed the chemicals' cost and shelf life and noted mosquito control work had required many staff hours. No council member raised objections to the request; a motion and second were made and the council voted to approve the amendment. The motion approved a budget amendment from excess reserves in the amount of $14,500 for the purchase of additional mosquito-control chemicals.
The council did not record a roll-call tally on the record as read in the transcript; the mayor announced "Motion carries." The director and staff noted a preference not to stockpile chemicals beyond expected need because the product has a shelf life.
The council adjourned following the vote and offered community well-wishes for Labor Day weekend.
