Danos said a federal DEA task force was carrying out an arrest in Tucson when a shootout left both a DEA agent and an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer shot in the head. He said one officer was wearing a helmet that he believes may have saved the officer's life. Danos said the incident involved a multijurisdictional task force and that the U.S. attorney responded to the scene; he did not have medical status updates for the officers.
On a separate incident, Danos said a severe dog bite occurred at about 1:30 a.m. and that at least one — and possibly two — victims were airlifted to Tucson for treatment. The sheriff said the attack appeared to involve a very large dog and that the department is investigating the circumstances.
Danos also described wildlife work in the Stump Canyon area: Game and Fish tranquilized and relocated a 200‑pound adult female bear, and several hours later a cub — described as not a newborn but small — was sighted in the area. Danos urged residents to call law enforcement if they see the cub so Game and Fish can attempt to reunite it with its relocated mother.
Danos offered condolences and prayers for the injured officers and their families and said the incidents underscore the pressures on law enforcement and their families.
