The Price City Council on Aug. 27 held a public hearing and approved distribution of proceeds from the International Days Golf Tournament to local charities and community programs.
Nick Tanton, who the mayor said helped organize the tournament, presented a recommended list of recipients and told the council the event has raised nearly $70,000 over the years for local causes. The council opened and then closed the public hearing by motion before voting to approve the contributions.
Council Member Willis moved to open the public hearing; Council Member Jesperson seconded. After hearing from event organizers and representatives of recipient groups, Council Member Jesperson moved to approve distribution of the proceeds; Council Member Miller seconded the motion, and the motion carried.
Recipients named during the meeting included Utah State University; United Way of Eastern (noted by the presenter as the Live, Love, Local cancer assistance program that provides gas cards to people traveling for cancer treatment); local hospitals and auxiliary groups (referred to as Cassaveau Hospital pillows/cases program and Castle View Hospital Pink Ladies); the local humane society and animal shelter; local community radio station fundraising efforts; the Price City Emergency Utility Assistance Program; Price City concerts; the South East Utah District Health Department (car-seat program); and the Price Chapel partnership for an entry flag. Several recipient representatives spoke briefly to thank the council and describe local needs.
United Way’s speaker said the Live, Love, Local program paid about $250 for travel assistance in 2015 and paid about $24,800 this year, reflecting increased demand for gas- or travel-card support for patients. The council and presenters noted the funds are intended to support local services, reduce pressure on other city budgets, and return event proceeds to community needs.
Ending: The council approved the distribution list and will disburse tournament proceeds to the named organizations and programs.
