The Muskego City Police and Fire Commission approved meeting minutes, voted to enter closed sessions for personnel matters, and promoted a police officer to sergeant while hearing a police chief report on recent flood response and staffing.
The police chief told commissioners the department's response to recent flooding was “awesome in the police department on many levels,” and said officers conducted door-to-door welfare checks, supported the fire department and activated elements of the emergency operations structure. “I was very impressed,” the chief said, adding that the effort drew on multiple resources and extensive officer work.
The chief also reported personnel updates: an award presented to Sergeant Marcus Klink by the Telesta Towers organization for his work with cadets and a drone program; a resignation submitted by Alec Matias from the Milwaukee Police Department with a potential start date later this month; several new officers and academy applicants in background checks; and ongoing firearms training for recent hires. The chief noted a candidate with a canine component is under consideration and said three background investigations are under way for potential academy applicants who could start in January.
Commissioners voted to convene closed sessions under Wisconsin Statute §19.85(1)(c) to consider employment, promotion and performance-evaluation matters. A roll-call vote on the record showed commissioners voting yes to move into closed session. After the closed session, the commission returned to open session and approved the police chief’s recommendation to promote Marcus Klink to sergeant; the promotion was moved and seconded and carried on a voice vote. The record shows commissioners announced the result as “Aye” and the commission confirmed the promotion.
Earlier on the agenda the commission approved minutes from multiple prior meetings (May 13, May 27, May 29, June 26 and July 21). The clerk read the statutory authority for the closed sessions aloud before votes were taken.
Commissioners and staff also discussed school resource officer assignments: the chief said SROs would be back in schools starting the week of the meeting and named several officers by first name who would return to school assignments. The chief thanked community volunteers and noted the department’s emphasis on keeping critical response corridors clear during public events.
The commission’s personnel votes and the department’s staffing updates are administrative actions that will take effect according to departmental processes; commissioners did not set additional public deadlines or make budgetary commitments during the portions of the meeting recorded in the transcript.
The commission recessed into closed session for interviews and promotion deliberations under the cited statute and planned to reconvene in open session to act on any public agenda items not yet addressed.
