Commission recommends landmarking Eastgate Hall and Stone Wing at Marathon County Youth Building

The Wausau Historic Landmark Commission voted to recommend landmark designation of Eastgate Hall—the Marathon County Youth Building—and its Stone Wing and will forward that recommendation to the plan commission for further review.

Acting Chair Kevin Crooks opened the public hearing and noted that proper notice had been given. He said he believed the building is owned by either the county or the fair board and characterized it as a public building; meeting material and prior meetings included information on the property.

No members of the public appeared at the hearing. A staff member said county park staff had attended a prior meeting and expressed concerns; the staff member did not report any new calls or letters opposing the nomination before this meeting. Commissioners noted other properties within Marathon Park are already designated and said administering the ordinance for park properties had not produced problems in the past.

A motion to landmark the Marathon County Youth Building/Eastgate Building and the Stone Wing was made and seconded. The motion passed after a vocal aye vote; one commissioner’s attempt to cast a nay vote was withdrawn and the chair declared the motion carried unanimously.

The commission’s recommendation is advisory and will proceed to the plan commission and potentially to the city council for final action under the local ordinance.

The commission did not record individual member vote tallies by name during the roll call; the record indicates the motion carried unanimously after the lone nay was withdrawn.
