Park board hears summer recreation recap; youth leagues to start Sept. 6
Summary
The Lennox Park Board received a summer programs update from recreation staff, who reported high participation in several events and outlined upcoming youth soccer and flag football schedules and maintenance follow-ups.
Recreation staff told the Lennox Park Board that summer programs finished with strong participation and that fall youth sports will begin the week of Sept. 6.
The recreation director reported that a summer tennis session on July 30 drew 35 children and that two rec golf sessions run with partner Jacob Hinker and Land Quarter Country Club attracted about 15 participants across two days. The board heard that a parking-lot pool party on Aug. 5 and a Pooch Paddle event on Aug. 18 were “a hit,” and that the department processed about 10 new job-license requests at the Pooch Paddle event.
“Things are winding down for the first summer season. It’s been a great first run at it,” the recreation director said during the report.
Staff provided enrollment numbers for fall programs: about 135 participants (kindergarten through sixth grade) are signed up across youth soccer and flag football; soccer is scheduled 9 a.m.–noon, and flag football noon–2 p.m. There are about 16 teen flag-football registrations and roughly 100 pre-K through fourth-grade participants on the soccer side, the director said.
On adult programming, staff said sand volleyball ran with five teams, the same as last year, and that pickleball concluded with a year-end tournament for both competitive and recreational leagues. The municipal pool is closed for the season; staff reported they initiated weekly cold‑water testing late in the pool season and will continue that practice next year as a recommended best practice.
The report also covered routine facility maintenance: storm cleanup assistance by parks crews; equipment repairs (the department’s Exmark mower and diving boards); a temporary chairlift repair at the pool; and removal planning for three additional ash trees affected by Emerald Ash Borer. Staff said they had completed one application of herbicide for a prairie-habitat site near Boynton and Juniper and planned follow-up applications per guidance from state partners.
The director noted an on‑going community survey for baseball/softball/T-ball with roughly 32–33 responses and said additional surveys for other youth and adult programs will be rolled out. A Girl Scout troop made birdhouses for placement around town, staff said.
The board approved the meeting agenda and the prior meeting minutes during the opening of the session, and later moved to adjourn at the meeting’s close.
Less urgent items discussed with attendees included uniform delivery timelines, volunteer coach meetings and use of school practice fields for fall programs. Staff said they will continue follow-up on supply logistics and coaches’ scheduling.
