Albany County approves sheriff office budget shifts for supervision, vehicles and equipment

The Albany County Legislature on an evening motion approved three amendments to the 2025 sheriff's office budget to reallocate existing funds for personnel, vehicles and specialized equipment.

The moves include transferring money between line items to create a supervisory (commander) position, moving $61,000 from auction proceeds into the vehicle budget line and moving $66,000 from an ambulance reserve into the budget to purchase a new stretcher.

The measures were described to the Legislature as internal reallocations rather than new appropriations. "This is just moving money around between two lines to create more of a supervisory position. It's a commander's [position] — it's for law enforcement," the Sheriff said during the meeting. On the vehicle line, the presenter said $61,000 represents proceeds from auctioned agency vehicles and thanked the Department of Public Works for processing the sale. On specialty equipment, the presenter said the $66,000 came from insurance revenue accrued when transports are billed back to insurers and therefore represents money the office has built up in a reserve.

Legislators asked no substantive follow-up questions on the personnel adjustment. Motions to approve each amendment were made, seconded and approved during the meeting.
