The Monte Vista City Council voted Tuesday to remove a Community Development Block Grant public hearing from the agenda, approved the consent agenda and minutes from Aug. 7, 2025, and adopted proclamations recognizing August 2025 as Overdose Awareness Month and September 2025 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month.
The council modified the agenda to remove item H‑1, a CDBG application from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. The motion to modify the agenda carried after a voice vote in which Councilor Howard, Councilor Loretz, Councilor Watson, the mayor pro tem and Mayor Becker each voted in the affirmative.
The council then approved the consent agenda, including minutes of the Aug. 7, 2025 regular meeting and accounts payable, by the same voice vote.
The council adopted two proclamations after a presentation by Kate Martinez, who identified herself as representing San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group. Martinez read language noting the local impact of overdoses and urging “compassionate, nonjudgmental treatment, harm reduction services, and community education,” and asked the council to proclaim August as Overdose Awareness Month. She also presented a proclamation recognizing September as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month.
Kate Martinez said, “Whereas overdose deaths continue to impact individuals and families throughout Monte Vista and across Colorado.” The council moved and seconded adoption of proclamation templates for both observances; the motion carried on a unanimous voice vote.
