Porterville committee outlines vision for downtown: events, cohesion, maps and incentives

Porterville Downtown Committee members on an hour‑long planning session focused on crafting a mission, vision and near‑term goals to draw visitors and strengthen downtown businesses.

Chair Ed McCurvey opened the discussion by asking the committee to “think big” about downtown and to center its work on a shared mission and family‑focused values, saying the group should aim to “reimagine downtown” rather than focus only on maintenance tasks.

The committee heard a public comment from Josh Flowers, who urged creative, experiential draws — for example, 3‑D projections and timed public moments — to bring highway traffic off the road and into downtown: “You get to reimagine the entire downtown culture,” Flowers said. He urged committee members to prioritize attractions that create an experience rather than additional regulation.
