Salem — Marion County commissioners voted Aug. 27 to approve a commercial on‑site septic grant of up to $164,227 to the City of Detroit to fund construction of a commercial septic system for the Detroit community center.
Brian Nicholas, Marion County public‑works director, told the board the county received wildfire‑recovery grants after the 2020 fires, and one of those grants funds the commercial septic repair, alteration and replacement program for properties impacted in the Detroit area. Nicholas said the community center currently uses a residential‑grade septic system for restrooms and that a commercial system is needed to support a commercial kitchen and larger event use.
Why it matters: The grant aims to defray substantial installation costs that can prevent commercial kitchens and other public uses from operating at full capacity after wildfire damage. The county noted the city has already retained a commercial‑septic design consultant and obtained permits.
Board action Commissioner Cameron moved approval of the agreement; the motion carried by voice vote. The grant uses federal funding and carries a project completion date of Oct. 31, 2026.
Ending The county will finalize the grant agreement so construction can proceed once the city completes required procurement and contractor selection.
