District reports strong staffing and device distribution after first day; transportation routing had early challenges

Superintendent Doctor Daniels and administrative staff reported on the district’s first week of school, saying the district experienced a successful start overall but encountered transportation routing issues after implementing a new cloud-based routing system.
Doctor Daniels told the board that the district moved routing from VersaTrans to Traversa and parent-route communications from My Stop to My Ride. The change, combined with scaling from summer routing to full-year routing for roughly 15,000–16,000 students, produced “bumps in the road” on the first day, the presentation said. Administrators reported incremental improvements through the week: by Friday the district had buses emptying at roughly 4:59 p.m. and improved to 4:56 p.m. the next day.
District staff recorded increased parent app participation (about 5,200 users on the new app) and said operations and routing staff were continuing after-action reviews and adjustments.
On staffing, Doctor Johnson reported a 99.7% fill rate among certified staff on the first day (1,793 certified positions with four still needing long-term solutions); classified work groups were at 90% or above in most areas, with paraprofessional fill rates near 89% and nurses and paraprofessionals remaining priorities for recruitment. Doctor Johnson said the district added 24 paraprofessionals for the new year and is paying stipends to qualifying student teachers.
In food service and technology, the district reported serving 15,863 meals on the first day and 18,855 the following day. Doctor Whaley told the board the district distributed 20,875 devices to students; elementary devices were pushed out before school to support early testing and classroom needs.
Board members praised convocation and staffing results but acknowledged parental concerns during early transportation disruptions. Administrators said they would continue route balancing and operational adjustments during the two-week leveling period following the opening of school.
