Nick, director of elementary education and federal programs, told the board the district served 8,230 students in summer school from June to early August, about 38% of total enrollment and down 174 students from the previous year.
Nick said the district opened the new Greenway Elementary in June, giving families an early look at the building before the fall start. In July, five Title I elementary schools ran 12-day literacy-focused sessions supported by counselors, social workers, reading teachers and ELL staff; administrators said the sessions were particularly appreciated by families of students with special needs and English learners.
Participation by grade band included “a little over 4,000” elementary students, about 1,300 middle school students, and roughly 2,000 high school students, the report said. The July sessions were funded by reallocated funds from two year-round schools, Nick said.
Board members asked for a further breakdown of high school summer participation by course type (credit recovery versus advanced or elective courses); Nick said he would provide that data after the meeting.
Nick also reported strong staff interest in teaching the July sessions; administrators said demand exceeded available slots for some teacher assignments. The district described July summer school as an extension of interventions provided during the regular school year.
The board did not take action on the report; it was presented as an informational item.
