Committee delays appointments to cultural, historical and memorial subcommittee; asks HMFH for process overview

Chair Ed Bridal recommended waiting for a presentation from HMFH to understand how other districts handled murals, memorials and artifact decisions before formal appointments. Several members said volunteers have already stepped forward and that the initial work can begin informally; others urged clarity about whether appointments require school‑committee and town‑council action.
Concerns discussed included how to handle memorial trees and plaques currently at the Gaudet School, whether to relocate or replace them, the timing of moving plants (seasonal transplant risk), and coordination with the tree commission. One community member noted that some memorial plaques may best be preserved by transferring them to a local historical society or library.
The committee voted to table formal appointments until the next meeting and asked HMFH to provide a short presentation showing the process, timeline, and sample graphic/mural treatments used on comparable projects. Members said the subcommittee’s initial tasks would be to inventory memorial items, propose handling for plaques and time capsules, and recommend an approach to murals and interpretive displays that respects the architect’s artistic work.
Next steps: HMFH will present examples and a proposed schedule; the committee will revisit formal appointments after receiving that guidance.
