Lancaster ISD maintenance and operations staff reported to the board that the district’s child nutrition program has seen improvements in meal quality after vendor selection, that the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) conducted a transition walkthrough with no findings, and that the district is following the required 21‑day menu cycle.
Dr. Kimbrough (maintenance & operations/child nutrition presenter) told trustees he sampled food across campuses and said students and staff reported better food quality after a vendor-selection process in which students participated. He identified the new third‑party vendor as Southwest Food Service and said the district passed a TDA walkthrough on Aug. 18 with no concerns noted.
Staff emphasized the importance of adhering to the USDA/TDA 21‑day menu cycle; the district reported being on day 11 of the current cycle with no deviations. Board members asked about meal provision for extracurricular and at‑risk programs; staff said a dinner program is available to students participating in after‑school activities and that participating program leaders submit rosters so kitchens can prepare the correct counts. Staff confirmed free meals are provided districtwide under the current program; extra meals beyond the free entitlement are billable to parents.
Ending Staff said the child nutrition program will continue routine monitoring and work with campus leaders to ensure rosters and meal counts are accurate and that the vendor contract delivers expected meal-quality improvements.
