Middletown building committee approves revised entrance sign design, establishes allowance for metal letters

The Middletown Building Committee on Aug. 27 agreed on a revised design for two entrance signs at the new Middletown Middle–High School and directed staff to carry an allowance for applied metal letters in the signage procurement so the project can move forward.
Architect Jack Leroux of HMFH presented the updated sign designs and said the revisions “curved the top of the sign and gave it some directionality” and added inset treatment for the town seal. The committee discussed several iterations, with members focusing on the wave logo’s shape and whether the town seal or a windmill motif made the sign look like an “eye” or a “bird.” Committee member Tammy Holden said she liked the color, telling the group, “I love, love the blue.”
The committee coalesced around a version that keeps the lower wave, replicates a wave form on the top, uses pin-mounted metal letters painted Middletown blue, and moves the town crest near the word “Middletown” so it does not read as an eye. Chair Ed Bridal urged restraint in ornamentation, saying the sign should “not become too graphic” because it will be on the site for decades.
Because final letter styles and applied graphics remain to be specified, the committee approved using an allowance within the signage line of the contract. Project staff said they will establish a dollar allowance for the metal, include that amount in the signage RTA (Request to Award) and reconcile the final cost with the vendor after award. Committee members asked that the design team return with a final drawing at the next building committee meeting.
The committee also discussed whether each entrance should identify both Middletown Middle School and Middletown High School or show a shared “Middletown Middle–High School” label; members noted the campus will be read from both sides and that the sign should not preclude access to either building. The team agreed that the sign wording can be adjusted in the graphics phase.
Next steps: the architect will produce updated sign art that reflects the committee’s direction (replicate the lower wave at the top, add a blue accent strip, square or soften the left edge to remove the “beak” effect, and reposition the town crest). Staff will put a signage allowance into the RTA and return to the committee with the revised art and recommended allowance at the next meeting.
