Board forms renaming task force and begins districtwide conversation on student dress code

Proviso Township High School District 209 board members reviewed a draft renaming-task-force plan and discussed a districtwide approach to student dress codes at the committee meeting.

The district reported it has created a draft policy and notified task-force members; the first meeting is planned for the first two weeks of September. Staff told the board they expect to bring a formal policy for review in the fall or early winter.

On student dress codes, staff presented current policy text and asked the board to consider consistent expectations across campuses, better communication with families and nonpunitive supports for students who cannot meet the requirements. A board member said one goal should be to avoid exclusionary discipline and to provide on-site clothing options for students who need them. "We need to make sure teachers are looking professional when coming to work because we can't say we want our students to look a certain way and our staff looks like they rolled out into bed," a board member said during the discussion.

Staff said they have seen positive rollout of the cell-phone policy and suggested similar communication, signage and student engagement (including student votes or contests) to normalize dress-code expectations rather than relying only on punitive measures.

The board also discussed representation for the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) delegate assembly (referred to in the meeting as the ISB delegate assembly), slated for mid-September; board members were asked to indicate interest so the district can register a delegate to vote on resolutions at the conference.

No formal policy changes or votes were taken at the committee meeting; staff said they would collect feedback, work with principals and return a drafted policy and recommendations for board action.
