Board introduces five student ex officio members to represent Sewanhaka schools

The Sewanhaka board introduced five student ex officio members who will attend meetings on a rotating basis and participated in leadership training through Nassau BOCES.
The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education introduced five students who will serve as ex officio, nonvoting student members of the board.
Superintendent Miss Agruza described the new positions as part of the board’s effort to include student voice in district governance. “This recognition provides students with an opportunity to express their voices and take ownership of their education,” she said.
The students named and the schools they will represent were introduced during the meeting: Evan Janleen Munsami (Elmont Memorial High School), Jasmine Chen (Floral Park Memorial High School), Christopher Sever (H. Frank Carey High School), Adam Abdullah (New Hyde Park Memorial High School) and Kiara Ozil (Sewanhaka High School). Each student member will be assigned two board meetings and will serve as alternates when scheduled members cannot attend. The students completed a day of leadership training through Nassau BOCES and were scheduled for additional governance instruction the following day.
Why it matters: the positions give students first-hand experience with school governance and a structured channel to bring student perspectives to board discussions. Board members recognized the students and asked district staff to photograph the group for district records.
The board applauded the students and recorded the introductions in the meeting minutes.
