Metuchen construction update: Moss classrooms and Edgar offices ready for Sept. 2; high school gym and AC delayed

Committee chair Mr. Glassberg said Moss School’s kindergarten classrooms and bus loop will be ready for the Sept. 2 start of school. Moss’s larger addition intended to support first and second grades is scheduled for completion in late December, he said.
At Edgar School, Glassberg said interior work and HVAC were on track for early September and that a newly converted office suite and classroom spaces should be ready for Sept. 2. However, he said the main entrance, bus loop and some site work will not be finished until later in September; students and staff will enter through the same door used last year (referred to in the meeting as Door 11) until exterior work is complete.
At Campbell School, Glassberg reported delays tied to PSE&G appointments that affected the school’s air‑conditioning schedule; he said AC work was expected to be completed around Sept. 15. The basketball court and playground at Campbell were expected to be ready Sept. 2, while interior cafeteria space likely will not be available until mid‑September pending a certificate of occupancy.
At the high school, Glassberg said an outdoor patio area tied to the new cafeteria addition should be finished for Sept. 2, but interior gym classrooms, the connecting wing and the board office are anticipated in late December. Field lights are expected to be energized in mid‑December. Glassberg also reported an ongoing issue assembling electrical switch gear needed in the gym and said air‑conditioning work for the high school was delayed by “a couple of months.”
Glassberg noted the committee has continued public outreach—he reported staff and volunteers met the public at the farmers’ market on Aug. 16—and said committee meeting dates will include a closed meeting on Sept. 15 and an open meeting tentatively scheduled for Oct. 6.
Why this matters: the June 2019 referendum and subsequent construction realignment are central to fall student placements; updated timelines affect entry points, bus operations and usable instructional space as the school year begins.
What’s next: the district will continue to monitor PSE&G scheduling and certificate‑of‑occupancy processes; the construction manager will provide written summaries to the board after meetings.
