The Township of Ocean School District Board of Education on Monday recognized Ocean Township High School students who won awards at three theater competitions in June.
The awards were announced during the board's meeting as administrators called students and staff to the front for recognition. Mrs. Walton, superintendent support, told the board and audience the district had winners at the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star awards, the Count Basie Awards in Red Bank and the Foxy Awards in Montclair.
The awards spanned categories including student achievement, marketing and graphic design, scenic artistry, outstanding company in a drama, outstanding direction, featured ensemble group and individual acting honors. "This is unbelievable and outstanding. So for all who were involved, congratulations," Mrs. Walton said as she called winners to the stage.
Principal Kazuba and other staff joined Mrs. Walton and Board member Wertwein in congratulating students. The board read a long list of student names during the recognition; board members asked the students to remain for photographs and public acknowledgment.
Board members and administrators also thanked custodial and grounds staff and other faculty who worked over the summer to prepare buildings and grounds for the return of staff and students. Administrators told the board that faculty report-back and student opening dates are scheduled: staff return Sept. 2 and students return Sept. 4; families were advised to contact their school's main office with questions.
The board noted the awards as a point of pride for the district and encouraged the public to view the full list of winners in the meeting minutes.
About the awards: the meeting referenced recognitions at the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star program, the Count Basie Awards (Red Bank) and the Foxy Awards (Montclair) as the events at which Ocean Township High School received honors.
