Committee members acknowledged the applicant’s interest in replacing the tree with a native black oak and in reducing invasive seed stock, but concluded the existing tree was performing well in its location beneath overhead utilities. Staff and commissioners discussed utility-line clearances and noted that utility companies perform pruning to minimum clearance requirements without regard to long-term tree aesthetics or health.
A neighbor representing the adjacent property said the tree’s maintenance had created debris issues and expressed a preference for native replacements; commissioners noted those concerns but also said the site’s overhead utilities and narrow right-of-way limit species choices. The commission voted to deny the removal without prejudice, allowing the applicant to pursue other avenues (for example, pruning or replacement proposals) and to return to the commission later if circumstances change.
