Forest and fire officials said at a Lake County work session that a 133‑acre wildfire on the approach to La Plata Peak remains within its established perimeter and will transition from a Type 3 to a Type 4 incident management team as crews continue to monitor smoldering fuels.
The fire is located near the La Plata Peak Trail, at elevations above 11,000 feet, and officials said accessing the ignition area is difficult — about two hours on foot under current terrain and weather conditions. Pat, a staff member with the incident management team, said heavy rains have substantially limited fire behavior but that the site’s steep slopes, dense standing and burned snags and unstable footing make direct, sustained engagement hazardous.
That combination of safety risks, limited helicopter lift capability at high elevation and long evacuation times for injured personnel prompted the decision to reassess tactics and reduce direct engagement. “It would actually take inches and inches of rain to put out the entire fire,” Pat said, summarizing why crews are shifting toward monitoring and contingency preparations rather than continued aggressive direct attack.
Why it matters: the site’s fuel profile — mixed conifer dominated by spruce with a heavy dead‑and‑down component — tends to smolder for long periods and can produce spotting that spreads fire irregularly. Chris, a fire behavior specialist on the incident team, said live fuel moistures in some sampled fuels were relatively high this season but that thousand‑hour fuels (roughly 6‑inch logs) remain the primary concern. Chris said one fuel sample from non‑spruce fuels showed about 127% moisture, and that fully saturating large down logs typically requires sustained, soaking precipitation and residence time for moisture to penetrate the entire log.
Officials described the current operational posture as a stepped‑down, precautionary approach. The Type 3 team that initially managed the incident will transfer responsibilities to a Type 4 organization tomorrow, and managers expect personnel on the fireline to drop from an early peak (about 130 personnel at one point) to roughly 25–30 people, including a newly arriving suppression module. Incident operations will continue to include periodic boots‑on‑the‑ground checks when safe, supplemented by remote sensing: unmanned aerial systems with infrared capability, and fixed camera monitoring requested through a DFPC enterprise group called Kotek.
Incident commanders said recent rain events helped “park” the fire and severely limit active flame spread, but they cautioned that drying periods could renew activity. “What we need are those thousands in particular to draw this moisture,” Chris said, describing why sustained moisture — not just a short heavy downpour — is key to reducing availability of the large fuels that keep the fire burning.
Officials also reviewed public‑safety measures and communications. Lawrence, a public information staff member on the incident, said a dedicated web page for the fire (referred to as NC Web in the briefing) is active and will include a staffed phone line for public questions. He said bulletin boards at the Twin Lakes visitor center and the district office carry updates and that incident and county public information officers are coordinating social posts and email lists for any change in conditions.
Closures and access: officials said several closures are in effect and under review to protect public safety and firefighting operations. La Plata Trail to the summit is closed and a road referred to in the briefing as “391” was described as closed; the south approach to La Plata was under active review and may remain closed depending on conditions. Lawrence said the team plans to issue updates as warranted and asked county partners to amplify official messages, especially over holiday recreation periods.
Local preparedness and mitigation: incident staff urged private landowners to maintain defensible space and noted community partners and programs that can help. The briefing named Colorado State Forest Service, Team Rubicon and local forest‑health councils as existing partners; officials said Harmony (community coordinator) has network connections to private‑landowners and funding opportunities. Incident staff asked county officials to continue promoting the creation of defensible space and to support outreach for homeowners.
What remains uncertain: managers said they will continue monitoring fire behavior and weather forecasts, and they retained the ability to “gear back up” and reassign or request additional resources as conditions change or if modeling indicates rising risk. They said resource availability is prioritized statewide and nationally through geographic and multi‑area coordination systems, so some assets can be reallocated if higher‑priority incidents arise elsewhere.
