Council introduces $100,000 transfer to begin engineering for downtown fire station replacement

The Brookings City Council held the first reading on Aug. 12 of Ordinance 25-031, which would transfer $100,000 from the general fund reserves (council priority projects) to the fire facility capital project fund to begin engineering and soil testing for replacing the downtown fire station.
Finance staff said the transfer is intended to initiate engineering and soil testing. According to staff, community engagement and design are planned for the fall, with bidding anticipated next spring pending site determination. The second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for the council’s Sept. 9 meeting.
Fire leadership said staff are focusing on property adjacent to the existing station (currently used for police department personal vehicle parking and a garage), and that neighborhood meetings, door-to-door flyers and public presentations will begin after the next design-team meeting on Sept. 2. Fire Chief Troy Hills Hughes (presenting) said the department has conducted introductory meetings with a design team and plans neighborhood outreach in September.
Council did not vote on the ordinance at the first reading; staff will return for a second reading and potential adoption on Sept. 9.
