Deputy mayor praises return of local coverage; urges community support for Brookings media

The deputy mayor told the Brookings City Council on Aug. 12 that recent developments at Brookings Radio and the Brookings Register are positive signs for local news coverage and urged community support for the outlets.
The deputy mayor said Brookings Radio plans to reengage long-form local conversations and that the Brookings Register is returning to two days of print publication, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He said the city can use the radio to communicate meeting times and initiatives in a “broadcast free environment.”
He urged residents and local businesses to support the outlets financially where possible — for example, by subscribing to the Register or buying local advertising — because “they are businesses, and they need to generate revenue to exist.” The deputy mayor described access to local media as “a crucial part” of the functioning of the community and public notice.
Council members and staff offered brief remarks welcoming the outlets’ return; no formal council action was proposed at the meeting.
