Galena Park Independent School District held a public hearing on its proposed budget and the tax-rate process on Aug. 26, 2025, led by Chief Financial Officer Ben Papi.
Papi told the board the hearing was held “as required by law,” that notice had been published in the North Channel Star and that a summary was posted on the district website. He said the budget must be adopted by Aug. 31 and the proposed tax rate would be submitted at a later meeting.
Papi outlined key figures: the general fund showed a deficit of just over $4,300,000; the food service fund showed a surplus of about $379,000; and the debt service budget that pays bond payments is a balanced budget of just over $43,000,000. He said there was no change to budget assumptions or enrollment projections since the August 11 workshop and that the budget assumes “disaster pennies of 3.799¢” (language used in the presentation).
The hearing record notes no public comments. The public hearing adjourned at 5:50 p.m.; the board indicated it would return later in the meeting to consider adoption.
