Planning commission recommends Leawood Wine & Spirits special use permit to governing body

The Leawood Planning Commission voted to recommend approval of a special use permit for packaged liquor sales at Leawood Wine & Spirits (case 82-25) under new ownership and forwarded the application to the governing body.

Planner Cameron Ewing summarized the request: the business, located in the Leawood Shops south of Somerset Drive and west of Lee Boulevard, is seeking approval for packaged liquor sales under new ownership. Staff reported the business is not within the 200-foot restriction of a school, college or church and that the application addressed the city’s evaluation criteria (the “golden factors”). The applicant held an interlocutory meeting on Aug. 5; no members of the public attended.

Applicant Brandon Myers told the commission he and his wife, Amanda Myers, plan to purchase the existing business, operate under the same name as a DBA and make no major changes to the floor plan; they confirmed the small tasting area at the back of the store would remain. Commissioners who previously considered the original permit said they recalled extensive prior discussion but reported no new problems since the store began operating in 2023.

Commissioner Block moved approval of case 82-25; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Fishman and approved by voice vote. The commission’s recommendation sends the special use permit to the governing body for final action.
