Visitor: youth kayak program thanks Petersburg community after Elks-funded kayaks delayed

Katie Homeland, youth program development and advocacy coordinator, addressed the board to thank the Petersburg community and partners after a shipping delay prevented arrival of a new fleet of grant-funded kayaks in time for this year’s youth kayak expedition.
"Petersburg showed up for our kids again," Homeland said, describing how staff and community members assembled a seaworthy fleet so children could safely use kayaks around Mitcalfa Island. Homeland said the new fleet was funded by the Elks but arrived late because of shipping delays; she said she looks forward to the new kayaks arriving so staff do not have to scramble in future seasons.
Board members and the CEO praised the program and fundraising events that support youth activities and hospital scholarships. The board heard the comment during the visitor comments portion of the meeting.
