Thurston County commissioners discussed the future of a regional home-energy ordinance during their July 30 check-in, with members reporting that the Climate Mitigation Collaborative has signaled a delay until next year because of staff capacity.
Commissioner Klaus said the collaborative “was mentioned that we're holding off until next year,” and acknowledged that some residents have pushed back. A county official present said the ordinance draft exists but that jurisdictions had been coordinating on timing.
The issue surfaced during the board’s external boards and commissions reports. Klaus said she had received a constituent email asking why the county would wait to advance an ordinance that is already drafted. She said the county plans to resume conversations after a staff member named Rebecca returns to work.
No formal action or vote was recorded at the July 30 check-in. Commissioners discussed whether Thurston County could move forward at the county level if local staff capacity allowed, but they did not adopt a timeline.
The discussion underscored a coordination challenge: multiple jurisdictions participating in the collaborative have been weighing whether to advance a unified ordinance together. Commissioners said staff capacity and interjurisdictional readiness were the reasons offered for pausing the effort.
Commissioners and staff said they expect to discuss next steps when the collaborative’s staff are available, but did not set a target date at the meeting.
