Parks and Recreation to split Gage Park Playland contract into multiple RFPs after no general-contractor bids

Shawnee County Parks and Recreation on July 28 received commission approval to break a previously advertised single-contract construction solicitation for Gage Park Playland into multiple, trade-specific requests for proposals.
Tim Laurent, Parks and Recreation director, told commissioners the earlier RFP seeking a single contractor to manage construction work for the Playland project received no bids. With timeline pressure to keep the project moving, the department asked permission to issue individual RFPs for excavation, drainage, concrete footings and related site-preparation work, then return to the commission to approve specific bid awards.
Commissioners asked whether in-house resources or the new facility manager could help coordinate work; Parks staff said the project remains playground-focused and they planned to manage bidding and contracts consistent with county purchasing policy.
The commission voted 3-0 to authorize Parks and Recreation to proceed with issuing those multiple RFPs. Staff said bid awards for the separate contracts will be brought back to the commission for approval.
