Design board approves internally illuminated monument sign for Pointer School property

Florence City’s Design Review Board approved a certificate of appropriateness for an internally illuminated monument sign at the former Pointer School property, 301 South Dargan Street, a site Florence School District 1 is repurposing as a Health Magnet Innovation High School.
City staff presented the application, describing the proposed monument sign as approximately 17 feet wide by 6 feet tall with a brick base and internal illumination. The property occupies nearly a whole block between Palmetto, Dargan and Pine streets, staff said.
Kyle Jones, deputy superintendent of Florence School District 1, told the board the district plans to use the renovated Pointer Building as a Health Magnet Innovation High School serving ninth through 12th grades and hoped the sign would help identify the building for students, families and community partners. Jones also described after-school activity that would keep students on site during evening hours, and said the district envisions the building as a community asset.
Applicants and the sign vendor said the monument sign would use subtle backlit LED lighting (a halo or edge glow) rather than full-face illumination; they presented mockups and said the sign would be mounted between existing brick columns and integrated with the property’s wrought-iron fencing.
After brief discussion about location and scale, a member moved to approve the application “as submitted”; the board voted by voice and the certificate will be issued.
