At the LDC 3 conference, speakers emphasized global partnerships, digital transformation, climate resilience and expanded electricity access as central to implementing the new program of action for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) over 2024–2034, and said the United Nations should broker regional coordination.
Speakers at the LDC 3 conference emphasized partnerships and the United Nations’ role in implementing a newly adopted program of action for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), saying digital transformation, climate resilience and expanded electricity access will be central to success over the decade 2024–2034.
A conference speaker summarized the event’s theme, saying, “The LDC 3 conference is all about partnership. The theme of the conference is driving progress through partnership.” The speaker listed transit countries, coastal states, donors, financial institutions and the private sector as partners central to implementation.
“For the first time, we have a program of action for the LLDCs, which includes a dedicated priority area on climate action and disaster resilience,” another speaker said, describing the document’s new priorities. The same speaker said the program places digital transformation at its core through “investment in science, technology, and affordable infrastructure for e‑learning, e‑governance, and e‑commerce,” and urged coordinated action among LLDCs, neighboring transit countries and development partners.
Speakers said the United Nations will play a central facilitation role. “The United Nations will have a very crucial role in facilitating dialogue and cooperation between the LDCs, transit countries and development partners, and other stakeholders in order to broker regional agreements and ensure coordinated action,” one speaker said.
Conference remarks also framed the program as a time-limited implementation window. A speaker called it “a once-in-a-decade opportunity,” and said electricity access will help define how the program of action is implemented during 2024–2034.
Speakers closed by framing the agenda as benefiting both the LLDCs and the broader international community. As one put it, “Together, we can unlock the potential of LLDCs, not just for the benefit of our nations and peoples, but for the shared future of all humanity and the planet.”
