Vernon Township board reviews self-evaluation, outlines next steps on strategy, onboarding, communications and facilities

A consultant presented the Vernon Township Board of Education’s annual self-evaluation during the board’s July 24 public meeting, highlighting strong committee work and policy development while urging more frequent strategic planning, improved onboarding for new board members, clearer public communications and a push to address aging school facilities.

The consultant, identified in the meeting as Mitch, walked the board through an overview of six evaluation areas and the full comments submitted by board members. Mitch said the board scored highest in policy work and committee use, and lowest on regularly revisiting vision, mission and goals: “Because you only have 1 meeting per year that you actually talk about the vision, mission, and goals,” he said, the district should schedule time to “revisit and reaffirm” them and consider a formal five-year strategic planning process.

Why it matters: The evaluation lays out specific follow-up items that affect district governance and public accountability — from how the board communicates student-achievement highlights to the community, to how it prioritizes limited capital funds for building repairs.
