Spring City canvassers approve countyreported primary totals; 16 local ballots not counted

Acting as the Spring City Board of Canvassers, the Spring City Council unanimously approved the countyreported results of the recent primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 19, during a brief session at Spring City Hall.

Council members accepted the countysupplied totals after the county advised that 16 ballots from Spring City were not counted: two had signatures that did not match the countyrecords, one was unsigned and 13 were mailed or received at the county after the deadline.

The countyreported final vote totals read into the record by the council chair showed Michael Broadbent with 139 votes; Laurel Wertman with 203 votes; Joseph McGriff with 119 votes; Randy Strait with 136 votes; John Stewart with 51 votes; and Margaret Parnell Grinstead with 104 votes.

A councilmember moved to accept a resolution formally adopting the figures provided by the county clerk; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. The chair announced, "It's unanimous," and council members signed the canvass document as required.

The council also heard a brief reminder from the county that the local rule requires ballots be received by the county before the close of election day to be counted. Council members noted that 13 late-arriving ballots could be material in a small municipality and urged voters to follow the countyposted deadlines.

No changes to the countyreported totals were made by the board; the action recorded in the minutes was acceptance of the county's report and signing of the official canvass document.

Looking ahead, the council adjourned the canvass portion of the meeting and moved on to other scheduled business at the same session.
