The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo condemned an attack over the weekend that killed dozens of civilians, displaced residents, and damaged homes and places of worship.
The mission said official reports indicate at least 49 civilians were killed by members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in what the mission described as a mass-casualty incident in the province referred to in the briefing. Several people were reportedly abducted and homes and shops were set on fire, worsening an already grave humanitarian situation, the mission said.
The UN mission said the attacks mostly occurred inside a place of worship. Peacekeepers said they coordinated with local authorities to support the response and provided medical care for the wounded. UNESCO increased security measures around the site by stepping up patrols, the briefing said. The mission called the acts serious violations of international humanitarian law and said it remains committed to helping Congolese authorities protect civilians and stabilize affected areas.
