EAC raises sidewalk/tree-root conflicts, plans to ask city engineering about long-term fixes

Members of the City of Erie Environmental Advisory Council on July 23 discussed guidance from a sidewalk-tree conflict webinar and asked staff to consult city engineering about alternatives to standard sidewalk construction that reduce tree-root lifting.
A member summarized webinar notes showing typical sidewalks are built with concrete over 4–6 inches of sand and gravel that tree roots favor, leading to lifted slabs. Members discussed alternative substrate layers, repair recommendations and how city sidewalk specifications affect future conflicts.
Council members asked staff to contact city engineers to review standard sidewalk specifications and consider whether the city can promote or require alternative construction techniques for new or replacement sidewalks. Members also discussed homeowner responsibility for repairs and permitting procedures; staff agreed to follow up with engineering and report back.
The conversation was framed as exploratory; no policy or code changes were proposed at the July 23 meeting.
