EAC subcommittee finalizes plastic-use survey and plans door-to-door outreach

The City of Erie Environmental Advisory Council’s plastic refuse reduction subcommittee said July 23 it has finalized a revised survey and plans to begin in-person outreach to local establishments beginning in August.
Sherry Mason, who chairs the subcommittee, said members reorganized the questionnaire, developed a one-page informational flyer with data drawn from a two‑year Gannon University study and Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach data, and plan to leave the flyer with establishments that cannot provide immediate usage figures. The subcommittee will collect usage numbers on a follow-up visit.
The group said it will meet with city staff and directors before fieldwork begins so city departments are aware of outreach and can respond to public inquiries. The subcommittee also discussed using the city seal on materials and leveraging city social channels; staff said they would discuss the request with city communications.
Members debated minor survey edits, including adding a question about which types of single-use plastics concern respondents most. The subcommittee said it will not pursue city council action before the new year, citing an upcoming municipal election and a preference to complete community outreach first.
