A staff member said this would be another year in a multi-year fleet replacement program and estimated the county has spent roughly $2.4 million to $2.5 million on vehicle purchases over the past eight years.
Commissioners and staff discussed fleet insurance and inventory management. A county official said insurance costs had increased and recommended auditing insured vehicles to remove totaled or nonoperational units from the inventory to avoid unnecessary premiums. The board also discussed whether the commissioner's office or the sheriff's office should process payment; staff said the commissioner's office typically transfers funds to a sheriff-controlled account for these purchases.
The extended warranty was described as optional; staff said the sheriff's office has rarely needed similar extended warranties within the original manufacturer's coverage window. Commissioners noted heavy daily mileage on patrol vehicles — sometimes several hundred miles in a day — as a factor in maintaining fleet readiness.
The motion to purchase the seven vehicles was put before the board, seconded, and approved.
