The vote followed extended discussion in which board members and the administration described the budgetary pressures driving the proposed cuts. Policy Committee materials and administration analysis noted reductions across several activities and that the district had attempted to identify least‑participated programs and other cost savings.
Board member Amy Levy argued against combining dance and cheer, saying coaches had explained they are “two different things” and that the combination could harm veteran teachers and students. Levy said she was “not able to support this at all.”
Board members who supported the consolidated approach cited the need to cut costs after multiple failed referenda and noted that activity pages on the district website group dance and cheer together. The roll call recorded the following votes: Juan Romero — Aye; Joanne Roux — Aye; Megan Miller — Nay; Brian Nichols — Aye; Tom Hankins — Aye; Amy Levy — Nay; Tia Johnson — Aye. The motion carried 5–2.
Administration said the changes would reduce district expenditures on stipends and addendum payments; the athletic directors and building staff had assisted in identifying where reductions could be made. The board approved the addendum matrix as presented; staff will implement the changes for the 2025–26 year and monitor participation and program impacts.
The debate included requests from members for further documentation and clarification about alternatives such as reducing all addendums by a percentage rather than combining specific activities.
