Speakers at Scottsdale Unified emphasize unity as key to student support

Students, staff and parents speaking at a Scottsdale Unified School District gathering emphasized unity as essential to supporting student learning and school spirit.

Speakers said unity helps students move between schools, builds pride at events and supports classroom progress. “Unity means we connect across communities to advance educational opportunities for all,” one commenter said.

A Desert Mountain student who identified themself as the incoming president of the student government described using inclusive planning to guide campus events: “When I plan events for the school, the very first step is to make sure everyone's voice is heard. And with all this feedback, we're able to unite in order to make the best decision possible for our student body events.”

District staff emphasized continuity of support as students move from school to school. “Unity is important for all of our staff across the district, between schools, because our students move from school to school, and they need to know that that support is going to be there wherever they end up,” a staff member said.

Other speakers highlighted school spirit and family engagement as outcomes of unity. “When people unite on a front together, it creates a sense of pride. It creates a sense of spirit and brings people together,” a student noted. A parent added that connecting with teachers and administrators shows students “the love that you have for learning and the support that you have for them.”

Multiple speakers described personal benefits from a unified district culture: staff members said the backing of colleagues provides a base-level support before greeting students each morning, and students said unity makes them “proud to uplift SUSD values.”
