Duxbury School Committee presses town on budget priorities; accepts federal grants and adopts committee goals

The Duxbury School Committee on Thursday raised questions about the select board's preliminary budget priorities and how a proposed 3% placeholder for school funding will affect the district, while approving this year's federal grant allocations and adopting committee goals with measurable changes.

Committee members spent much of the meeting pressing for clarity after a Sept. 8 joint session with the select board and finance committee. "I'm pretty disappointed in the select board's priorities as it relates to the school funding," said Matt, a Duxbury School Committee member, saying the board's 3% placeholder felt like "an arbitrary cap." Committee members said they were unsure which programs the select board considered "core services" and urged clearer rationale from the select board for its prioritization.

The committee also agreed to a number of procedural and planning steps tied to the budget cycle: members set a budget workshop for Friday, Sept. 26, 08:30'09:30 a.m. at the Central Office and asked that future agendas include a brief "strategic-planning update" from the two school-committee liaisons participating in the district's consultant-led strategic-planning process.
